The North level District Internal Drainage Board are proud to be hosting the ADA Demonstration on the 17th July 2013.  The demonstration is to be held at the Boards Cross Guns Pumping Station located 1.5 miles south of Thorney Toll Village of the A47.

 ABOUT THE SITE

The construction of the new Cross Guns Pumping Station was commenced during 1974 and completed in 1977. The station drains 6,600 hectares of land. There are 6 No. 800mm. dia. pumps in the building, three driven by electric motors and three by diesel engines. Each of the pumps discharge 1.5 cubic metres of water per second, which is equivalent to 90 (approx) tonnes of water per minute. The three original Dorman 8JT. V8 diesels have been replaced with Cummins M11.P.350, ten litre, six cylinder 270 bhp. at 2,000 rpm. diesel engines. The manual clutch being replaced with a granulock spherical shot coupling. The control of the diesel pumps has also been linked into the Board’s telemetry system thus making the pumps totally automatic.

The lowest land draining to the pumping station is –1.20m. and the high water level in the tidal River Nene is + 4.0m. Therefore there is a 5.2m. difference between the low land and the high water level in the river. The floor level inside the building is 6.5m. above the lowest part of the construction and 3.0m. below the highest water level in the River Nene to the rear of the station.

The banks of the West Counter Drain adjacent to the Pumping Station will be used for the demonstration of plant and equipment.  Approximatley 2.5km of the West Counter Drain will be used for the demonstration suitable for boats, pumps, bank  mowers, flails and excavators etc.
