Cross Guns Pumping Station

Constructed in 1977 as part of the North Level Major Improvement Scheme. It was designed to evacuate surplus water from an area of 6640 hectares of predominantly agricultural land but also protecting rural properties and the village of Thorney.

There are 6 No. 800mm diameter axial flow Sulzer pumps, 3 driven by Brook 230HP electric motors and 3 driven by Cummins M.H. P350 ten litre, six cyclinder 270hp diesel engines.

The lowest land in the catchment being –1.20metres ODN, some 5.20m below the high water level in the adjacent tidal river Nene. At full capacity the station discharges 562 T/min.
